Revolut Makes Bold Move Into Latin America With Cetelem Argentina Deal

Founded in 2015, Revolut has quickly risen to become a dominant global fintech player, offering a broad suite of digital financial services including multicurrency accounts, money transfers, crypto trading, and budgeting tools. With more than 40 million users globally, the London-based company has long been eyeing Latin America as its next big growth market. It already has operations in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia.

Argentina is an especially attractive market for Revolut due to its large unbanked population, chronic inflation, and the growing appetite for digital financial services. The acquisition of Cetelem opens the door for Revolut to introduce its hallmark low-fee, digital-first banking model to Argentine consumers, who are often burdened by high costs and outdated financial infrastructure.

“We’re excited to enter Argentina through this acquisition,” said a Revolut spokesperson. “With Cetelem’s license and our technology, we’re well positioned to bring real financial innovation to the Argentine market.”

Cetelem Argentina is currently a relatively small player in the market, primarily focused on consumer lending. However, under Revolut’s ownership, it is expected to be restructured and rebranded to deliver a much broader range of services. Revolut plans to offer features such as:

  • Multicurrency accounts
  • Instant domestic and international transfers
  • Currency exchange
  • Card payments
  • Cryptocurrency access

Revolut’s entry into Argentina will place it in direct competition with local fintech leaders such as Mercado Pago, the digital wallet arm of MercadoLibre, and Ualá, an Argentinian fintech that recently became a licensed bank. With this move, Revolut signals its intention to be a serious competitor in one of Latin America’s most dynamic fintech ecosystems.
